Amazon PPC Management - Keywords: How Many Keywords Per Amazon Ad Campaign?

The Full Question:

Hi Heath,

Do you still suggest exact match 5-10 keywords in video campaigns? Or can you target more keywords in each campaign?

I have two variations (2 colour options) would you think it was a good idea to run 2 video campaigns with two different sets of keywords?

Also when you say main target keywords, could you clarify you mean highest relevancy, highest search volume?

Thank you

The Answer:

Thanks for the questions.  My answers are below in white..

"Do you still suggest exact match 5-10 keywords in video campaigns? Or can you target more keywords in each campaign?" - Yes, 5-8.  If you have too many keywords you can easily end up with a large spread of clicks across multiple keywords which means you must wait longer before you can get meaningful data to bid manage them.

If you have a large budget you can afford to have more keywords, however, you will eventually see some of them won't get impressions. The budget can be eaten up by busier keywords - so you end up removing keywords anyway. I usually begin with a small amount.  If all of them get traction, then I might consider adding a few more to see if they also benefit from being in that campaign.

“I have two variations (2 colour options) would you think it was a good idea to run 2 video campaigns with two different sets of keywords?”  Yes because you can only target one product with a video ad, so if there are people searching by colour, you can target colour specific keywords and run the ad for the specific coloured ASIN.  For more general words, you could choose whichever sells more often.

“Also when you say main target keywords, could you clarify you mean highest relevancy, highest search volume.”  yes, usually that's it.  You first want the most relevant and then target those with the highest search volume - most relevant meaning that a shopper can't be looking for something else other than your item.  Therefore, some higher search volume keywords might not be as relevant, they would likely be secondary keywords and not your primary ones.  You want the algorithm to know your primary audience and the search terms they are using to buy your product.
