Amazon Listing Optimisation - Titles

Question

What is the perfect length of title for a product while listing on Amazon?

Answer

It depends…

It’s a balancing act with a few juggling balls that you need to keep in the air. These are:

  1. Your title is one of the most important parts that the algorithm uses for indexing. Though it indexes all of your content, with the exception of A+ (which is indexed by search engines), the title plays a key role in aligning the correct keywords, and therefore shoppers, to your listing. You need to have your most relevant keywords in there that are also the most searched for (without losing relevance).

  2. Your title needs to appeal to the shopper. If you have unique features or ones that your product is particularly good at, you need to try to get that across in the title to entice clicks

  3. You need to get your title seen and not missed during a skim-read. If any of your competitors are using words in their titles, then include some numbers like the size or 100% handmade. If the competitors surrounding you have long titles, use a short one, and vice versa. A shopper’s brain will subconsciously pick out any difference, rather than the initial meaning of the text. This strategy goes for your hero image and branding. If most sellers have red packaging, you go for blue, so it stands out.

  4. The title needs to support what is in your content so that when people click on your ad or organic placement your bounce rate is low, and people buy or stay on your page for long, showing interest in your product.

  5. Amazon likes short titles. 50–80 characters are its sweet spot. It has all the data on what works, however, that data might not be of value to your listing as it may not reflect what works for launches, the age of your listing, and the target audience. So, you would need to dig a little. See if Amazon sells in your category, how much it sells, is its price bracket similar, its ratings and reviews are similar - could all these things impact the view that the title should be a certain length?

  6. A/B test titles if you can. Not all categories are allowed, and if the product type doesn’t sell enough you won’t be able to do it. But otherwise, you can test two titles running at the same time and Amazon will show them differently. It will report on the data which can be set for as long as ten weeks. It will then say which title it thinks will perform the best.

Notes: I have discovered how to affect the Amazon canonical URL to get more than five keywords in there. This can be a real advantage for search engines, and getting traffic to your listing from the likes of Google. I have learned some tricks to drive attention to sellers’ listings through their titles. I know this because I studied the algorithms for seven years. The Truth is out there!
